There’s something special about talking to a stranger. No history, no expectations, no awkward “so how’s work?” — just two people meeting for the first time and seeing where the conversation goes. Gibbur makes it easy to talk to strangers online: one click, one random person, one-on-one, free and anonymous.
- Gibbur pairs you with one random stranger for a private text chat. Free, no sign-up.
- It’s 18+ only — everyone confirms their age and agrees to the rules first.
- Add interests to meet people who share your hobbies, or go fully random.
- You’re anonymous: your partner sees “Stranger,” not your name, email or IP.
- Keep personal info private, skip anyone who makes you uncomfortable, and report rule-breakers.
Why talk to strangers?
We’re told from childhood not to talk to strangers. As adults, though, a little conversation with someone new can be one of the best parts of a day. Online, it’s easier than ever — and you control how much you share.
- Meet new people from different places, backgrounds and walks of life.
- Beat boredom when you’re up late or stuck waiting.
- Practice a language or just practice small talk without the pressure.
- Get an outside view. Sometimes a stranger with no stake in your life gives the most honest take.
- Have fun. Random conversations are unpredictable in the best way.
How to start talking to strangers on Gibbur
Getting started takes seconds:
- Open the chat. No download or account needed.
- Confirm you’re 18+. Tick “I am 18 or older and agree to the Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.”
- Add interests (optional). Up to 10 tags, like gaming, anime or music.
- Say hi. You’re matched with one stranger. If it’s not a fit, hit New chat (or press Esc twice) to meet someone else.
Gibbur first tries to find someone who shares one of your interests. If nobody matches within a few seconds (about six by default), it connects you with a random stranger, so you’re never left waiting. Shared interests are shown to both of you when you match. Read more about chatting by interests or see how it works.
Prefer a little continuity? A free optional account lets you save a display name, birthday, gender and interests. You still appear as “Stranger” to the people you chat with.
Tips for great conversations
Talking to strangers is a skill, and like any skill it gets easier with practice. A few things that help:
Open with something interesting
“hi” is fine, but a question gives the other person something to grab onto. Try “What’s something you’re weirdly good at?” or “Best song you’ve heard this week?” Our conversation starters page has plenty more.
Be curious, not interrogating
Ask follow-up questions and share a bit about yourself too. Good conversations go back and forth — not like a job interview.
Use your interests
If you matched on a shared interest, start there. “Oh, you’re into anime too — what are you watching right now?” is an easy win.
Read the vibe
Some people want a deep chat, others want jokes and memes. Match their energy, and don’t be afraid to steer the conversation somewhere fun.
Skipping is normal
Not every chat will click, and that’s okay. Everyone on a random chat site is browsing. If someone skips you, don’t take it personally — and feel free to skip too.
Good chat etiquette
A random chat is only as good as the two people in it. A little courtesy goes a long way:
- Say hi before you skip. Give people a moment — the best chats often start slowly.
- Keep it respectful. Follow the Community Guidelines — breaking them can get you banned.
- Don’t spam. Copy-pasted messages and rapid-fire walls of text get caught by Gibbur’s rate limits and flood detection anyway.
- End chats kindly. A quick “gotta go, nice talking!” before you leave is always appreciated.
- Respect boundaries. If someone doesn’t want to answer a question, let it go and change the subject.
Treat the stranger on the other side the way you’d want to be treated, and you’ll be surprised how often they return the favor.
Safety tips for talking to strangers
Gibbur is built to be safer than the free-for-all chat sites of the past, but your own good judgment is still the best protection. Keep these in mind:
- Protect personal info. Don’t share your full name, address, phone number, school or workplace, or social media handles with someone you just met.
- Never share passwords or financial details. No legitimate stranger needs your bank info, codes or logins.
- Be wary of links. Don’t click links from people you don’t know, especially if they push you to.
- Watch for pressure. If someone rushes you to move to another app, asks for photos, or makes you uncomfortable, end the chat.
- Skip and report. One click on New chat ends things instantly. Use Report for anyone breaking the rules.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is.

How Gibbur helps keep you safe
Here’s what Gibbur does on its side:
- 18+ only. Everyone must confirm they’re an adult and agree to the Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.
- Anonymous by default. Your partner never sees your name, email, IP address or account.
- Reports and bans. Repeatedly reported users can be automatically banned for a while, and moderators can ban by IP, browser or account.
- Active moderation. Moderators can view live conversations and recent messages to enforce the rules.
- Anti-spam. Rate limits, duplicate-message detection, a 1,000-character message limit, and links blocked in the first few seconds of a chat help keep bots out.
- Private by design. Message text is never written to our database or disk; it’s held in memory for up to two hours for moderation, then discarded. See the Privacy Policy.

Why text is a great way to meet strangers
Gibbur is a text chat — no camera needed. That means no pressure about how you look, more privacy, and more time to think about what you want to say. It’s how Omegle started, too. (Curious what happened there? Read what happened to Omegle, or see why people choose Gibbur as an Omegle alternative.) Video is planned for later.
