Sometimes you don’t want a camera in your face. You just want to talk — to someone new, someone who doesn’t know you, someone who might make you laugh or see things differently. That’s what text chat with strangers is for, and it’s exactly what Gibbur does: free, anonymous, one-on-one text chat that starts in a single click.
- Gibbur is a free text chat with strangers — one-on-one, in your browser, no download.
- No sign-up required. Just confirm you’re 18+ and accept the rules.
- Add up to 10 interests to match with people who like the same things.
- You show up as “Stranger.” Your name, email, IP and account stay hidden.
- Message text is never saved to a database or disk.
Why text chat?
Video gets the headlines, but text chat has a quiet superpower: it puts the focus on what you say, not how you look. There’s a reason Omegle itself started as text-only.
- No camera pressure. Messy room? Bad hair day? On the bus? Doesn’t matter.
- Time to think. You can pause, craft a reply, and be your wittiest self.
- Chat anywhere. Text works quietly — in bed, on a break, in a café.
- More private. No face, no voice, no background details giving away where you are.
- Easy exits. If a chat isn’t clicking, one tap and you’re onto someone new.
Text chat is also great for introverts, people practicing a new language, and anyone who just thinks better in writing.
How to start a text chat on Gibbur
- Go to the chat page. It runs right in your browser.
- Tick the box confirming “I am 18 or older and agree to the Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.”
- Add interests if you like — gaming, anime, music, books, whatever you’re into.
- Start chatting. You’ll be paired with one stranger. Say hi!
That’s it. No profile, no email, no password. If you want to save a display name and your interests for next time, you can create a free optional account — but you never have to. More detail in how Gibbur works.
What you get
Interest matching
Add up to 10 interest tags and Gibbur first looks for someone who shares at least one. If nobody matches within a few seconds (about six by default), you’ll be connected to a random stranger instead, so there’s no endless waiting. When you match on an interest, it’s shown to both of you — instant icebreaker. Learn more about chatting by interests.
Simple controls
- New chat — skip to the next stranger. Shortcut: press Esc twice.
- Stop — end the current chat.
- Report — flag someone who breaks the rules.
You’ll also see a typing indicator, so you know when your partner is replying, and an online count.
One chat per tab
Each browser tab is its own independent chat. Open a couple if you like — tabs from the same browser are never matched with each other.
Anonymous by default
On Gibbur, you appear as “Stranger.” Your partner never sees your name, email, IP address or account — even if you’ve signed up. The only thing they might see about you is the interests you have in common.
What you choose to share in the chat is up to you. Our advice: keep it light on personal details, especially early on. For more, see our guide to anonymous chat.
Privacy and security
A good text chat should be honest about what happens to your words. Here’s how Gibbur handles it:
- Not saved. Message text is never written to our database or to disk. A copy stays only in the chat server’s memory for up to two hours for moderation and spam fighting, then it’s discarded.
- Encrypted in transit. Everything travels over HTTPS and secure WebSockets (TLS).
- Delivered only to your partner. The server decides who you’re paired with, and each message is tagged with a per-chat ID so it can never end up in a different conversation.
- Not end-to-end encrypted. We’re upfront about this: the server relays the text so moderators can enforce the rules.
- No tracking cookies. Only strictly necessary cookies. No ads, analytics or third-party trackers.
Full details live in our Privacy Policy.
Keeping text chat safe
Gibbur is 18+ only, and everyone agrees to the Community Guidelines before chatting. Behind the scenes:
- Every chat has a Report button, and repeatedly reported users can be automatically banned for a while.
- Moderators can view live chats and recent messages, and can ban by IP, browser or account.
- Rate limits, a 1,000-character message limit and duplicate-message detection keep spam down.
- Links are blocked in the first few seconds of a chat, a common bot pattern.
Tips for better text chats
- Open with a question. “What are you up to tonight?” beats “hi” almost every time.
- Be curious. Ask follow-ups. People love talking about the things they care about.
- Match the vibe. Some people want deep talk, some want memes. Read the room.
- Don’t take skips personally. Everyone’s browsing. Move on and try again.
- Use interests. Shared tags make the first message easy.

Who text chat is for
Text chat with strangers isn’t one thing — it’s whatever you need it to be that day. A few of the people you’ll find on Gibbur:
- The night owl who can’t sleep and wants someone to talk to at 2 a.m.
- The language learner looking for real, casual conversation instead of textbook drills.
- The hobby nerd who wants to talk games, anime or music with someone who actually gets it.
- The overthinker who needs a fresh, neutral perspective on something.
- The curious who just wants to see who’s out there.
Whichever one you are today, the start is the same: open a chat, say something, see what happens. If you’re new to it all, our guide to talking to strangers and random chat page are good next reads.
Text chat vs video chat
Video can be fun, but it comes with more pressure and more exposure. Text is lower stakes, more private and easier to moderate. That’s why Gibbur starts with text. Video is planned for later, but text chat is the heart of the experience. If you’re coming from Omegle, see how Gibbur compares on our Omegle alternative page.
